Week 1 Reflection

Formative vs. Summative Assessment: What's the Difference? - Graduate Programs for Educators

During the first week of classes, we talked about assessment in the classroom. Assessment is the process of observing, recording and documenting the work children do and how they do it. It also informs educators on how to change their teaching strategy if the class isn't comprehending a lesson. Some examples of assessment include planning, placement and parent conferences. By completing assessments, you collect evidence. There are two types of evidence collecting called Sampling and Profiling. Sampling is when you gather samples of work, and Profiling is what you gather information about the child. There is also a cycle called the Assessment Cycle that demonstrate the continuous cycle of assessment. This cycle includes gathering evidence, giving feedback, reflecting and planning, and finally teaching and learning.

We also learned about the different types of assessment. Sone of these types include Formal, Informal, Authentic, Performed Based, Formative, and Summative. The most common type is Formal and Summative assessment. Formal assessment is assessment for learning; informing. Summative assessment of learning; a summary. There is also Diagnostic Assessment which provides you with insight about how your students perform. Some ways that I will use different types of assessment in my classroom are to give out unit tests and quizzes after every lesson is successfully taught, small group interventions, fun classroom games like Jeopardy, and exit tickets!

  1. Ana, I like how you discussed the two different types of evidence collecting! Sampling and profiling are two important and useful skills teachers should know about when trying to understand where a student stands academically. I also like how you described how you will make assessments fun for your future students, Jeopardy is a great idea!
